The National Communications Authority (NCA) has urged the public to disregard claims made by investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni to the effect that the government is scheming to "shut down Joy FM and tame Telco giant, MTN Ghana."
The journalist, according to the Authority, should not have made those 'prejudicial' statements concerning the development since the two issues are currently before the court adding that "Mr. Awuni owed the public a duty to have contacted the NCA for its side of the story."
“The two issues that the writer speaks about (Reclassification of FM Radio Coverage, which process commenced in 2013, and Declaration of Significant Market Power (SMP) in relevant markets, which process commenced in 2014), are in court,” the NCA said.
The NCA has, however, decided to await the decision of the law courts and "refrain from making any prejudicial comments thereto.”
According to the NCA, all regulatory actions they have undertaken are well intended to among others, protect the interests of consumers, promote competition in the provision of communications and serve the public interest.
"The general public is therefore entreated to disregard news, information and opinions which claim otherwise.”
The National Communication Authority also assured the public that it will execute its mandate as enshrined in the law to uphold compliance by all authorised players in the sector.
