The opposition National Democratic Congress has urged its polling agents and supporters at various registration centres to defend themselves through whatever means necessary.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, the party’s Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi noted that although the party has filed numerous complaints of attacks on its polling agents, the Ghana Police Service is not forthcoming with results.
Thus, it is important that members of the NDC take precautionary measures and always be ready to protect themselves in line with the right to self defence as stated in the constitution.
“Comrades who are listening to us, do not sit aloof and allow these cowards and criminals to beat you, maim you and even kill you. Mobilise yourselves, come together and defend yourselves.
“Take whatever means necessary to defend yourself against harm and against death. Call on us anytime you need any support and we will stand by you every step of the way,” he stated.
He added: “To make sure that we resist this rule of terror and tyranny and we know we shall prevail at the end of the day because power is transient.”
The Communications Officer further accused the President Nana Akufo-Addo of orchestrating and supervising all the attacks meted out to party members.
But reacting to this, the General Secretary of the Cristian Council of Ghana on Joy FM’s Top Story, said this could cause anarchy thereby destroying the several years of peace-building.
Dr Cyril Fayoose advised the NDC to trust the democratic process which involves the law enforcers and judicial system to carry out their mandate as stipulated by law.
"I believe we must trust the institutions and if they are failing us. Then we must call them to task and ask them to do what is required of them.
"But we should not take the law into our own hands," he stressed.
