The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II has urged President Akufo-Addo to intervene and halt the Bank of Ghana's (BoG) proposed construction of a new headquarters building.
The $250 million project has faced strong opposition from the Minority in Parliament, who have declared their intention to stage a protest at the Central Bank's premises.
Expressing his view, the Dormaahene emphasised that the decision to proceed with the new headquarters construction is ill-timed, particularly given Ghana's existing economic circumstances.
He made these remarks during a visit to his palace in Dormaa, located in the Bono Region.
The occasion involved a courtesy call by a delegation.
“We heard that the BoG is building a new headquarters at a cost of 250 million dollars. That is about a quarter of the money we are seeking from the IMF. We want the President to intervene. He should meet with them and rescind that decision and communicate same to us."
Meanwhile, it is over a week since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) hinted at moves to get the Bank of Ghana Governor and his two deputies removed over mismanagement of the country’s resources including the building of a new head office which it describes as badly timed.
The opposition party claims that Ernest Addison in tandem with the Finance Minister, supervised a loss of over GH¢60 billion in 2022.
They made this known at the Moment Of Truth series where they called for Dr Addison’s head and that of his two deputies.
They threatened on August 8 that the BoG head must either resign or risk a massive protest in 21 days.
The Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson made the call on behalf of the NDC.
Subsequently, the NDC warned that should the governor and his deputies refuse to heed the calls
being made by them, they will take appropriate actions.
“We are resolved to embark on popular action to occupy the Central Bank and drive out the team of inept, callous, and criminally minded mismanagers of our finances to save the Bank of Ghana,” he said.
