The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has said it will investigate reports that its new electronic road worthy certificates are being faked.

Middle-men, known as ‘goro’ boys are counterfeiting the certificates and selling them to drivers at astronomical prices.

The Accra Central Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) has already charged with forgery and conspiracy, a suspect arrested for faking the certificates.

Francis Vivor was picked up by the police after an investigation by Joy News’ Kwetey Nartey revealed that he has been faking the road worthy certificates for drivers at the Weija office of the DVLA.

The DVLA has given strong indications that it will not only deal with the ‘goro’ boys but also drivers who patronise their services.

Operations Officer at the Accra Central MTTD, ASP Sulemana Sulley said these drivers are not entirely innocent.

“Almost every time we get these drivers arrested, the owners pretend as if they are innocent and we are rather trying to put something on them.

“But we are saying that it is not that they don’t know. The people who go there to do it, know that they are actually not dealing with the right people,” he added.

He advised that vehicle owners who are unable to procure their roadworthy stickers personally should ensure that they authenticate it at the offices of the MTTD.

The DVLA has meanwhile warned staff of the Authority against engaging these middlemen.

Head of Public Relations at the Authority, Kwaku Darko Aferi said those found culpable will be duly sanctioned.

He indicated that although it may be entirely possible that none of its staff is or has been involved in the illegality, nothing will be left to chance.

“We have asked our head of security to follow up and if it comes out that any DVLA official is involved, we will deal with them.”

He is hopeful that the measures put in place by the Authority will vehicle owners to stop dealing with the middlemen and come directly for their stickers.
