The Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, has accused the Members of Parliament for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of not being decisive in the passing of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy).
According to him, the actions of the Parliamentary Majority show that the "government is not ready with government business."
“So today, we in Minority, we were asking them about the uncertainties surrounding their actions on the e-levy. They, themselves are not decisive,” he said.
His comment comes after the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh described as worrying the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin’s frequent absence, especially during critical decisions in the chamber.
Speaking on Top Story on Friday in reaction to Mr Annoh-Dompreh’s comment, Mr Ahmed Ibrahim said the Speaker has been in Parliament for the past week yet the Majority in Parliament has failed to put the e-levy before the House for consideration.
Therefore his absence to seek medical care should not be mentioned as the reason for the delay of the bill.
He also said that the delay in passing the e-levy bill should not be blamed on the absence of the Dome-Kwabenya MP, Adwoa Safo.
“The government came out to say that Adjoa Safo was out on health grounds, she sought permission therefore her position was given to Cecilia Abena Dapaah.”
Mr Ibrahim added that NPP MPs “even without the absence of Adwoa Safo, they cannot mobilise the remaining 137.”
This, he said was because the Majority Caucus themselves are not happy about the e-levy, hence, the delay in building consensus on the bill.
“They should come out and be factual to Ghanaians. If there is something wrong with the e-levy let Ghanaians know. So it is not as if the absence of Adwoa Safo or Speaker Bagbin that is why the e-levy is not being passed,” he indicated.
