The Electoral Commission (EC) has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in the violent disruptions at its offices during the collation of polling station results for the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday, January 17.
The Commission described the incidents as unacceptable, citing threats to staff, destruction of property, and the presence of unidentified men in military uniform among the attackers.
The violence occurred after the EC attempted to resume the collation of results on January 17, 2025, in compliance with a High Court order.
The EC in a statement signed by the Deputy Chairman in Charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, the Ghana Police Service had alerted them to intelligence suggesting potential security risks but failed to provide adequate security at the collation centers.
This lapse led to supporters, reportedly led by the Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), invading both the Old Head Office and the new Corporate Head Office of the Commission.
The Commission said the invaders destroyed property, including furniture and windows, and issued threats that forced staff to flee the premises.
The EC stated that video evidence of the perpetrators is available and urged the Ghana Police Service to act swiftly to bring them to justice.
“We call on the Police to swiftly bring the perpetrators to book by identifying, arresting, and prosecuting them,” the EC stated.
The Commission also appealed to the government to ensure the Police provide adequate security to allow it to complete its mandate without further disruptions.
The EC reassured the public of its commitment to declaring a winner for Ablekuma North but stressed the importance of a secure environment for its operations.
