The Electoral Commission (EC) has printed 18 million guarantor forms for the upcoming new voters’ register compilation, Deputy Chairperson of the Commission, Eric Bossman has said.
Amid growing cries among some opposition parties that the registration exercise could lead to mass disenfranchisement of the voter population, Dr. Bossman says reiterates there is no cause to worry.
The guarantor system can fix all the concerns of the National Democratic Congress and like-minded groups or persons, Bossman told Mamavi Owusu-Aboagye on JoyNews’ AM Show Wednesday.
According to him, the EC is ready to handle a high number of people using the guarantor process to enroll.
He added, however, that with the National Identification Authority (NIA) expected to distribute some 12 million Ghana cards before the EC begins its registration on June 30, most eligible voters should not need a guarantor.
Mode of registration
The EC will be using cluster system for the first phase of the registration, Dr. Bossman says.
Explaining this, the Deputy EC boss said although registration will go on at every centre, the EC will spend about six days at each cluster of about five registration centres in the same area.

This, the Commission will do to prevent people moving from the area to a different electoral area to register.
After they have exhausted the six days at a cluster they will move to the next cluster.
The Commission aims to have each machine register 100 persons per day during the actual registration exercise.

But those who are not able to register during the first phase need not worry, Dr. Bossman asserts.
He explained the EC will do a three-day simultaneous mop up exercise across the country where those who missed out during the first phase can register.
The entire exercise is expected to take 38 days.
Dr. Bossman added the schedule for the exercise will be published a week to June 30 when the compilation is scheduled to start.
