Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, Chairman of the Economic Sub-Committee for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Manifesto, has defended the party’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, against criticisms associating him with Ghana’s recent economic challenges.
Dr. Assibey-Yeboah maintained that the responsibility for managing the economy primarily lay with former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and other economic managers, rather than with the Vice President.
In an interview with Channel One TV on Monday, November 11, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah argued that, although Dr. Bawumia held a prominent role in government as Vice President, his responsibilities did not include the direct management of the national economy.
Instead, he highlighted that Dr. Bawumia’s focus was on initiatives such as digital transformation and financial inclusion, leaving economic management largely to the Finance Ministry and associated agencies.
Dr. Assibey-Yeboah urged voters to consider Dr. Bawumia’s capabilities and his proven track record in innovation and modernisation.
He appealed to Ghanaians to support Dr. Bawumia in the upcoming elections, noting that his achievements in digital reforms have positively impacted various sectors and improved accessibility for citizens.
Expressing confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, Dr. Assibey-Yeboah stated that he believes Dr. Bawumia is well-equipped to lead the country through economic recovery and further transformation.
He concluded by urging Ghanaians to give Dr. Bawumia the mandate to revitalise and advance Ghana’s economy.
“This school of thought that if you are a Vice President, are you really in charge? We want to put everything on his doorstep. But you and I know that people like Ken Ofori-Atta [former Finance Minister] ran the show. Even though he’s the Vice President what is his day-to-day mandate as it were?"
“So now, he’s saying that give me the opportunity. The Economic Management Team is a creation of a President, it is not on our books.”
