The Muslim Peace and Reconciliation Committee, under the auspices of the Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun, has intensified its community engagement on the need for peace during and after the 2024 general election.
Since the beginning of the year, the committee has been carrying out numerous community engagements across the region.
With only days left until the election, they are now focusing on engaging young people in various Islamic Senior High Schools.
The students and teachers were reminded of several Islamic teachings from the Quran and Hadeeths that extol and prioritize peaceful co-existence.
“The essence of peace cannot be overestimated,” explained Sheikh Mohammed Ridwan, the chair of the committee.
It is our responsibility to ensure that we educate the young ones on the need to not allow themselves to be used for illicit activities during electoral seasons”, he stated
The committee is calling on the Electoral Commission, Police, Political Parties, and all stakeholders to play by the rules of the game and avoid acts that could jeopardize the peace and harmony enjoyed by Ghanaians.
According to Sheikh Ridwan, the Peace Committee would continue its work by monitoring and observing the processes until the elections were held and results were declared.
The committee is also appealing for logistics and materials support to strengthen its operations beyond the elections, working to prevent, manage, and resolve petty conflicts in Zango communities in the Ashanti region.
With only a few days left until the general election, the committee has sent a circular to all Islamic scholars in the Ashanti region, urging them to prioritise and dedicate their Friday sermons to educating their congregations on peaceful elections and coexistence.
