Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced an end to the unregulated and indiscriminate awarding of road contracts, stating that the current administration is committed to restoring order, transparency, and accountability in the sector.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, 30th July, Mr Agbodza criticised the approach of previous administrations, which he said often led to the award of contracts without proper planning, budgetary backing, or adherence to procurement regulations.
“The era of uncontrolled, unregulated award of road contracts is far gone,” the Minister declared. “We now have in place strict procurement procedures and prioritisation mechanisms to ensure that every project we undertake is necessary, properly funded, and delivered on time.”
He noted that the legacy of these poor practices had resulted in a backlog of unpaid contractors and several stalled road projects, undermining public confidence and delaying national development.
Mr Agbodza emphasised that his ministry is determined to ensure all current and future road projects are thoroughly scrutinised and aligned with national priorities. He pledged to collaborate with relevant state agencies to guarantee that infrastructure delivery is efficient and cost-effective.
“We are building a system that focuses not just on numbers, but on quality, integrity, and sustainability,” he added.
The Roads Minister reassured Ghanaians that under the new regime, transparency, discipline, and fiscal responsibility will guide all contract awards, marking a clear departure from past practices.
