Residents of Akatakyieso in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region are living in fear after an alleged invasion by an unauthorised taskforce on the concession of Mickey Mining Company.
They are alleged to have assaulted workers and bolted with gold bars.
According to reports, a group of heavily built men claiming to be from National Security stormed the community and the mining site in a dramatic fashion on Tuesday, April 29, assaulting workers and leaving several people injured.
The incident has generated widespread fear among residents.

The Chief of Akatakyieso, Nana Nuako, has described the situation as a very bad precedent and has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved.
"Mickey Mining Company is not engaged in illegal mining activities; the firm has its license and is recognized by the Minerals Commission," he stated.

According to the Chief, such actions are not the right approach to fighting illegal mining.
"Attacking workers in legitimate mining firms creates confusion and undermines the collaborative effort needed to end illegal mining," he emphasized.
The residents of Akatakyieso, together with their traditional leaders, are calling on President John Mahama, and the Ashanti Regional Police Command to launch an investigation into the matter and take necessary actions to protect legitimate mining companies.
