Former Auditor General, Daniel Yao Domelevo, says that the creation of additional government institutions alone does not effectively tackle the issue of corruption.
He says if President Akufo-Addo was serious about protecting the public purse, then the various government institutions such as the Ghana Police Service (GPS) and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) would not be needed in the fight against corruption.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on July 19, he said “If the president was serious about what he was telling us before he came into office that 'I shall protect the public purse', doing that does not involve all these institutions. Creating additional institutions does not necessarily contribute to the fight against corruption."
He stated that, true progress against corruption is based on strong leadership and good policy implementation.
“Assuming the president comes out and says, gentlemen, there is too much rot according to the Auditor General’s report, so all my ministers, I have given you two months to clear all the issues raised in the audit report and give me an update or status update."
“If you are not able to do a good job, you are gone and I would not work with you anymore and he does it, do you think the impunity will continue? We don’t need to prosecute people anymore. Once it storms at the top, it will drizzle at the bottom,” he said.
According to the former Auditor General, he was committed to pursuing cases involving government officials.
He noted that addressing corruption at the highest levels would naturally lead to improvements lower down.
"Anytime a situation arises and there is an official of government involved, I will go after the person because if it storms at the top, we will see the drizzling at the bottom.”
