Former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has urged President Akufo-Addo to respond to the growing calls from various groups and labour unions to put an end to the rampant destruction of forest reserves and water bodies caused by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
He emphasised the importance of addressing this environmental crisis for the benefit of the nation's future.
Professor Frimpong-Boateng stressed that the President holds the ultimate authority to take decisive action against the galamsey menace, which continues to threaten the country's natural resources.
He appealed to the President to prioritize the interests of the Ghanaian people and take the necessary steps to halt the damage.
The former minister warned that the future of the country is at serious risk if immediate measures are not taken.
He called on the President to act swiftly in order to safeguard Ghana's environment and secure the well-being of future generations.
“Heed the call of citizens, CSOs, professionals, academics, research institutions and trade unions to bring an end to the destruction of our forest, water bodies and associated biodiversity.”
“The very existence and future of Ghana are very at stake and Mr President I know you care…Disobedience and destruction of nature cannot be endured for too long,” Prof Frmpong said at a grand durbar to mark the climax of the Asogli Yam Festival in Ho on Saturday, October 5.
Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng also used the opportunity to urge Ghanaian youth to step up and hold their leaders accountable for the challenges they face.
He stressed the importance of youth activism in pushing for responsible leadership and ensuring that the needs of the people are addressed.
The venerable professor further called on the next government to make job creation and environmental restoration top priorities.
According to him, tackling unemployment and repairing the damage caused to Ghana’s natural resources should be at the forefront of any future administration’s agenda.
