The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Telecommunications Chamber, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, has called on government to provide more resources for the National Identification Authority (NIA) to ramp up the registration process for the Ghana Card.
According to him, the ongoing Ghana Card registration which has been characterized by long queues and many other challenges has demoralized a lot of Ghanaians from going ahead to get the cards.
This, he says, is significantly contributing to the delay in the sim re-registration process.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he stated that government must provide the NIA with some more logistics so the Authority can take the registration process as close to the people as possible.
“The same way if we want to elect politicians, we do the registration not at the constituency level but at the polling station level where you bring the registration as close as possible to the electorates.
“We need to take advantage of this care imperative of wanting to get everybody’s sim registered to say that we’re giving NIA money again, go out and do another mass registration but take it as close as possible to these people.
“We need to ensure that when we do that there’s data, there’s connectivity in those places so that they actually can issue and print the cards at that place,” he said.
His comments come at a time when thousands have been queuing at the El-Wak stadium and the headquarters of the NIA in Accra for identity management issues including replacement of lost cards, updating of personal records and correction of errors.
The slow movement of the queues has left many frustrated.
