President John Mahama has launched the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund (MahamaCares) initiative, saying it is not just a healthcare programme, but a symbol of hope for thousands of families across the country.
Speaking at the launch of the initiative on Tuesday, April 29, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), Mr Mahama described the initiative as a beacon of hope for thousands of Ghanaians facing long-term health challenges.
“Ladies and gentlemen, today we are launching more than just an initiative. We are launching hope – hope for thousands of Ghanaians living with chronic diseases, hope for families battling the overwhelming cost of care,” he said.
He emphasised that the fund marks a critical step towards health equity, declaring, “This is hope for a future where the quality of life is not determined by one’s ability to pay for essential treatment.”
President Mahama noted that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund is designed to support specialist-level treatment for a wide range of chronic illnesses, including cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, stroke, and others.
According to him, the fund is expected to bridge a significant gap in the country’s healthcare system, where advanced treatment for such conditions is often inaccessible to many due to high costs.
Mr Mahama said the initiative reflects his commitment to a more inclusive healthcare system, where no Ghanaian is left behind due to financial constraints.
