A tragic incident at the Bortianor Bus Stop on the Mallam-Kasoa highway on Friday, June 20, resulted in the death of a woman who was attempting to cross the busy road.
The accident involved a long vehicle, registered as WR 1475-13, which struck the victim as she stood at the median.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the driver of the truck swerved off the main road to avoid colliding with other vehicles that had halted to allow pedestrians to cross safely.
Unfortunately, this manoeuvre led to the truck tragically running over the woman.
“The woman didn’t see the truck coming because this road lacks adequate lighting. From Mallam junction to Kasoa, the streetlights are present but are non-functional, making it incredibly dangerous for pedestrians,” a bystander who witnessed the incident recounted during an interview with Citi News.
This accident raises serious concerns about pedestrian safety and infrastructure along one of Accra’s busiest highways.
The absence of streetlights along many roads makes pedestrians vulnerable during nighttime crossings.
Local authorities have been urged to address these safety issues and improve the conditions of the road to prevent future tragedies.
Traffic accidents in Ghana are a growing concern, with statistics showing an average of 2,000 fatalities annually and tens of thousands of injuries.
Calls for improved road safety measures, including functioning streetlights and pedestrian crossings, have intensified in light of such incidents.
As investigations into the accident continue, the focus remains on enhancing road safety to protect pedestrians and ensure that such heartbreaking events do not occur again.
