Distinguished U.S. lawmakers and Ghanaian diplomats have reflected on Ghana’s historic independence and the enduring influence of African and diaspora leadership.
The Ghana Diaspora Public Affairs Collective (GHPAC) hosted a cocktail reception bringing together distinguished policymakers, members of the African diaspora, and friends of Ghana to celebrate Ghana’s independence and the enduring bond between the country and its global diaspora community.
The event was attended by Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, who reflected on the historic significance of Ghana’s independence and its lasting impact on the African continent.

The Ambassador paid tribute to Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, acknowledging the visionary leadership and sacrifices that led Ghana to become the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence from colonial rule in 1957, an achievement that inspired liberation movements across Africa.
Also addressing the gathering was U.S. Congresswoman Gwen Moore, who highlighted the richness and global influence of African culture. She shared reflections from her memorable visit to Ghana, praising the country’s vibrant cultural heritage and the warmth of its people.

U.S. Congressman Donald Beyer Jr also emphasised the enduring legacy of African and African-diaspora leaders who have shaped diplomacy, scholarship, and international cooperation. He referenced notable figures such as W. E. B. DuBois and former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, praising their contributions to global diplomacy and the advancement of African voices on the world stage.
The reception served as both a celebration of Ghana’s historic journey to independence and a reaffirmation of the strong cultural, historical, and diplomatic ties between Ghana and the African diaspora.
Through dialogue and fellowship, the gathering underscored the shared commitment to strengthening partnerships that promote cultural exchange, mutual understanding, and collective progress.
