There is a heavy security deployment to Mamponteng, a community in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region, after a clash between youth groups on Monday night left two persons severely wounded.
In the quest to avert the escalation of the disturbances in the area, armed police officers have been deployed to tighten security and safety in the area.
Some youth from the Zongo and Asante community engaged in reprisals after one person was attacked over his refusal to hand over his mobile phone to two men who confronted him.
The agitated youth rivals rampaged through the community and vandalised properties, including the destruction of a glass window of a mosque.
Police in Mamponteng have since intensified patrols in the area to maintain order.
Assembly Member of the Bronum Electoral Area, Yaminu Suleman, recounted that the tension between the feuding parties started on Friday, December 24.
In an interview with Accra-based CitiNews, he said, “there was one youth who came from town to go and get something. Unfortunately, he did not get what he wanted, so he decided to buy something else; He met two men who demanded his phone. He resisted and struggled with them. Before he could realise, they had stabbed him with a knife.”
“He was taken to the hospital. We do not know what happened, but it seems that his colleagues heard what had happened the previous day, and so they went to the camp of the other side to retaliate,” he added.
No arrests have been made so far. However, the injured persons have been put on admission at the hospital.
