The MP-elect for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, is delighted about his victory in the just-ended by-election at his constituency.

Speaking for the first time after winning, Mr Quayson said despite being treated unfairly for nearly three years the outcome of the election serves as a vindication that he won the seat fairly the first time.

As a believer in the rule of law, the newly elected MP said he would allow the laws of the country to take their course. However, he was optimistic that with the support of his constituents and party, he would come out unscathed.

“This is a victory not just for myself, it is for the people of Assin North and in fact the country Ghana. Hopefully one day we will pursue a good direction of justice.

“I was treated very unfairly, I should say, but I have to abide by the court’s decision. I didn’t call for this, they did. And if they didn’t believe, we all know the results now and we’re going to work with it,” he said on Tuesday.

Mr Qyason further noted the just-ended by-election proves that Assin North electorates have a conscience.

According to him, his constituents considered their current living conditions and voted for an individual who seeks to bring about development and transformation.

“We need to realise that politics is not just about sharing money to citizens for votes. It’s about development. Democracy itself is about development and we are going to set this trend along to make sure that people who are represented get a fair share of the national cake.”

James Gyakye Quayson who was contesting for the Assin North parliamentary seat on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious after polling 17,245 votes representing 57.56%.

He was ejected from Parliament last month following a Supreme Court decision annulling the 2020 constituency election.

His main rival, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party polled 12,630 or 42.15% of valid votes to place second, while Liberal Party of Ghana’s Bernice Enam Sefanu polled only 87 votes or 0.29%.
