Private Legal Practitioner, Maurice Ampaw says he is ready to honour the invitation of the Kumasi Traditional Council.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership has been given a one-week ultimatum, starting from today, Monday, to produce its Chairman in the Ashanti Region, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, before the Kumasi Traditional Council at the Manhyia Palace.
This follows alleged derogatory remarks he made against the Asantehene about a fortnight ago.
Chairman Wontumi is expected to make an appearance with Lawyer Maurice Ampaw who is also alleged to have made similar derogatory statements on radio.
Responding to the invitation in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday, January 22, Mr Ampaw said although he has the right to be represented by counsel, he is willing to go “out of respect.”
“I will go on Monday out of respect,” he pointed out.
He mentioned that it only lies within the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to extend invitations orally. Consequently, he anticipates receiving a formal notice to clarify the grounds for the invitation.
“As I speak, I do not know which issue is at stake, which comments I have made” he added.
He noted that although he has not been officially notified of any summons, he is ever ready to make it in order to raise his concern at the meeting.
Lawyer Ampaw maintained his stance on the comments he passed before the summons.
… I did it in the public interest. It is a matter of public interest. Everything that I said there, I am responsible. Chairman Wontumi is not responsible. If the Traditional Council deems it fit to invite me, they should provide better particulars,” he said.
Meanwhile, the NPP has directed party members to refrain from making any sensitive comments about the Manhyia Palace.
