The former Chairman of the NPP in the Northern Region, Daniel Bugri Naabu is expected to appear before the Ad-Hoc Committee set up by Parliament to investigate an alleged plot to oust Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo-Dampare.
This follows his absence at last Thursday's hearing due to health reasons.
Earlier, the Committee's Chairman, Samuel Atta-Akyea, had issued a stern warning against any attempts by witnesses and individuals to hinder or delay their work.
According to Mr. Atta-Akyea, witnesses or individuals summoned to appear before the Committee must respect its timetable and schedule by acknowledging the sacrifices committee members are making to ensure proceedings run smoothly.
“We do not want people who appear before this committee subsequently to be giving excuses to delay our work. I do not believe that it is right and proper that when people are invited to appear before the committee, they rather schedule a time for the committee, it should be the other way around. If you know all the sacrifices people make for the committee, people should be in their constituencies, but they are here and the witness is the one who is holding us to ransom.”
"We expect all those summoned to appear before the committee to recognise the value of time," Atta-Akyea stated.
Subsequently, the Committee adjourned proceedings to Monday, August 28, 2023.
Background
On July 25, the Speaker of Parliament announced Abuakwa South MP, Samuel Atta-Akyea as the chairperson of a 7-member adhoc committee to probe the recently leaked controversial audio in which voices are heard clandestinely plotting to oust the Inspector General of Police.
The viral audio, which revealed a conspiracy by a senior police officer and a leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare from office, resulted in a debate on the floor of Parliament with the Minority calling for a forensic audit.
Subsequently, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin proposed the Special Committee last Thursday, adding that the names of the members should be presented to him within one week.
Making the list public during Tuesday’s sitting, Mr. Bagbin said the committee is to submit its report by September 10.
“We are falling on the committee to do a thorough job and to report when we return before the end of September,” he added.
The members of the committee are MP for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Boamah; Madam Ophelia Mensah Hayford, MP for Mfantsiman Constituency; Eric Opoku who is the MP for Asunafo South Constituency; and Peter Lanchene Toobu, MP for Wa West.
Also, the MP for Builsa North, James Agalga will act as Vice Chair for the Committee.
The team will also receive technical assistance from lawyer and human rights expert, Dr. Isaac Lartey Annan.
