The ruling NDC has remained resolute to dismiss its members contesting the December polls as independent candidates, ironically, some affected members are rather being seen as favourites in their various constituencies.
Andrew Nii Okaikoi, Okaikoi North; Dr. Ato Quarshie, KEEA; and Michael Teye Nyaunu incumbent NDC MP for Lower Manya Krobo are but a few of the candidates who seem to have gained favours with their constituents and are likely to pose a major threat to the governing NDC.
Dr. Ato Quarshie who is a former MP for KEEA, for instance, says his decision to go independent is to protect the NDC party’s votes in the KEEA from shrinking as a result of the lack of confidence the constituents now have in the current MP for the constituency.
Andrew Okaikoi who was duly elected last year as the NDC parliamentary candidate for Okaikoi North was replaced with one Nasiru Abass, two weeks to the filing of nominations in a primary not supervised by the party’s regional executive and the Electoral Commission: after the constituency was divided into North and Central constituencies.
Seeing the move as “the greatest injustice that you can ever give to somebody that belongs to your own”, Andrew Okaikoi decided to go independent.
Despite the fact that the party claimed he and others who went independent have been dismissed from the party, he is often invited by party apparatchiks at functions due to the following that he commands.
For instance, irrespective of the fact that he is standing in the Okaikoi North constituency, when the Zongo for Mahama (ZFM)was inaugurated in the Okaikoi Central constituency, Mr Okaikoi was invited as the guest of honour who sworn in the constituency executive.
Interestingly, the event which happened recently was attended by the NDC National Vice Chairman and Ghana’s Ambassador to Egypt Said Sinare, the NDC parliamentary candidate for the constituency, John Mensah, Founder of ZFM Alhaji Sofo Jajah, among other executives of the party.
Mr Okaikoi who seems unperturbed by the decision of the party against him, told Myjoyonline.com that the move would not deter him from working for the party.
He said he was prepared to answer the calls of the party, especially those at the grassroots, in whatever way his assistance was needed.
