The Ministry of the Interior has initiated a full investigation into allegations made by the Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Mr Samuel Appiah Darko, who claimed on live television that he was handcuffed and beaten by 17 police officers.
According to the Ministry, Mr. Appiah Darko made the revelation during an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile, a current affairs programme broadcast from Accra on December 6.
“The Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Mr Samuel Appiah Darko, mentioned the assassination attempt on Newsfile, a television station in Accra, on December 6, 2025,” the statement read.
During the same discussion, he also alleged that the Special Prosecutor, Mr Kissi Agyebeng, had survived two assassination attempts while performing his duties.
“He also claimed on the same programme that he had been handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel.”
In a statement issued on Monday, December 8, the Ministry said the allegations, if proven, carry serious implications, not only for the safety of officials within anti-corruption institutions but also for the integrity of the country’s broader fight against corruption. It added that the claims strike at the core of public trust in security agencies.
The Ministry confirmed that initial engagement with Mr Agyebeng suggested the alleged assassination attempts took place before 2025. However, it noted that there are no records or formal complaints lodged at any police station or state security agency regarding threats on his life.
In response, the Minister for the Interior has ordered two separate investigations: one into the alleged assassination attempts on Mr Agyebeng and another into Mr Appiah Darko’s claim of physical assault and unlawful restraint by police officers.
It emphasised that “crime does not expire”, assuring the public that both allegations will receive a thorough and impartial examination.
“The Minister of Interior has further directed as follows: Since crime does not expire, the Ministry has ordered a full-scale investigation into the claim of assassination attempts,” the statement added.
The Ministry said updates will be provided as the investigations progress and once determinations are made regarding any further action.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the lives and property of all Ghanaians, stressing that every citizen must be able to go about their lawful duties without fear, intimidation, or threats.
“The Ministry of Interior reiterates its commitment to protecting all lives and properties to ensure that all Ghanaians can conduct all their lawful affairs without any fear for their safety,” the statement concluded.
