The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his efforts in prioritising climate change through his recent appointments.
According to Braimah, the President’s decision to maintain the Ministry of Environment, appoint a Minister of State in charge of Climate Change, and rename the Energy Ministry to the Ministry of Energy and Renewables all signal a strong commitment to addressing the climate crisis.
Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, January 25, he said: “The President is, to a large extent, from the appointments, giving an indication of how he’s prioritising the whole issue of climate change.
“So you have him maintaining the Ministry of Environment. You have someone appointed as Minister of State in charge of climate change, and then, of course, you do have the Energy Ministry also renamed Energy and Renewables.”
He emphasised the importance of climate change, noting that it impacts nearly every aspect of life, including food security, human security, health, ocean conservation, and forest reserves.
“For me, that indication that the President is giving some priority to the big issue about climate change, which affects literally everything—whether it's about food security or human security or health, the oceans, the forest reserves that we have, and all of that—it's all about the climate crisis. So it’s good to see the President prioritising that,” he added.
