The National Coordinator of the National disaster management organization [NADMO] has been adjudged the best Cocoyam Farmer at the Eastern Regional level of the Farmers’ Day celebration held at Osiem in the East-Akyem municipality.
He received a spraying machine, cutlasses, a bicycle, fertilizers and wellington boots for cultivating 20-acres of cocoyam.
Apart from cocoyam cultivation, Portuphy, who is the Chief Executive Officer of ‘Danyame farms’ can boast of several acres of Cocoa, plantain, citrus and poultry.
The unassuming Portuphy expressed gratitude to the organizers of the event for a ‘successful celebration’.
Speaking to journalists after the awards ceremony, Mr. Portuphy challenged the youth to venture into farming because it is a very lucrative venture.
“I will urge the youth of this country to take up the farming business. My brother, it is very lucrative and I must confess that I have survived on this business since 1984”.
Synonymous with politicians, the affable Portuphy could not do without mentioning the contributions of his government to the growth of agriculture.
He said the NDC government will continue to create the enabling environment for agriculture to thrive.
Tako farms producers of livestock emerged the overall best farmer in the Eastern Region. He took home a tricycle, a spraying machine, bags of fertilizer, wellington boots and cutlasses.
Several other farmers across the region took home various prizes in the areas of aqua-culture and plant crop cultivation.
Speaking under the theme, “Reducing post harvest loses for sustainable food security and nutrition’’, Eastern Regional Minister, Hellen Adwoa Ntoso advised farmers to adopt the use of technology in farming since it helps expand the farms yields.
