After close to six months, the Korle Bu Renal Dialysis Unit is set to be reopened to the public.
This is according to the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Isaac Offei Baah.
In an interview on Joy FM, he stated that the unit was opened on the back of Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu's directive.
Also, the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Mohammed Amin Adam has assured that the government will find a way to deal with the situation, adding that it is unacceptable for Ghanaians with kidney failure to go through what they are experiencing.
Speaking on Joy FM's Midday News on November 2, the PRO said "The Honorable Minister has directed the Chief Executive of Korle Bu to as a matter of urgency make the place opened and issue a statement for Ghanaians to know that the place is opened."
The dialysis unit was shut down in May 2023 due to a delay in the delivery of some consumables and outstanding GH₵4 million cedis debt owed.
After the place was shut, a number of deaths of patients were recorded as a result of patient’s inability to access dialysis treatment at private dialysis centres, which is more expensive than the treatment offered at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
According to Mr Offei Baah, the concerns of the hospital have been addressed, adding that the debt will be settled.
Touching on the issue of an increment in the cost of the dialysis fee from GH₵385 to GH₵765, he noted that an agreement has not been reached on that matter.
Meanwhile, JoyNews checks indicated that despite the directive, officials at the unit say they are awaiting a letter from the management in order for the directive to take effect.
Sources say the Public Relations Unit is in the process of writing a statement to trigger this modality for outpatients to get access to dialysis services.
