The Director of Communications at the Jubilee House has indicated that the list of MMDCE nominees has been finalised by President Akufo-Addo.

Mr Eugene Arhin, taking to social media on Wednesday, revealed that the said list will on Thursday morning, be submitted to the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Dan Botwe.

According to him, Ghanaians should "expect the list to be announced by the Minister very soon."

His announcement comes at a time when the Minority in Parliament and some members of the general public have expressed worry over the delay in the appointment of  Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives by the President.

The Minority described the development as unconstitutional and a drawback to the country’s decentralisation drive.

“The President is not a caretaker President and he is to govern in accordance with the law in respect to the constitution and not as he pleases. He appears to be sleeping and dozing off on the job and taking the Ghanaians for granted.

“It’s inappropriate and illegally for person’s whose constitutional mandate has elapsed to be asked to act in acting position that is repugnant to the constitution and the laws of the country," Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu had stated.

Also, the Civil Society Organisations Platform for Good Governance (CSOPGG) demanded that the President ensured that the list was gender-balanced and inclusive, adding “at least 30 per cent of MMDCEs in every region should be females”.

But President Akufo-Addo insists the delay in nominating Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) has not hampered development in the country.

“There is no vacuum in local government in Ghana as we speak today," the President said during his two-day tour of the Western North Region.

According to him, he is keen to ensure that all appointed persons are competent enough to handle the responsibility assigned them and also pledged that the list of nominees will be released this month.

"I have to make sure that they fit into the political purposes of the government and respond to issues of competence and political suitability. This month of September, all these matters would be resolved,” he assured.
