President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish a new public university in the Savannah Region, as part of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) pledge to expand access to higher education across Ghana’s six newly created regions.
Speaking during a "Thank You" tour in the regional capital Damongo on Saturday, June 14, Mr Mahama said the proposed institution would specialise in agriculture and allied sciences and play a pivotal role in developing the skilled workforce required to support the NDC’s "Feed Ghana" programme and its broader agenda for agricultural-led economic transformation.
“I’m proud to announce that, in line with the NDC’s 2024 manifesto to establish a public university in each of the six new regions, a public university will be built right here in the Savannah Region,” Mahama said.
“This university will not only be symbolic; it will be functional, targeted, and grounded in our national agenda for skills-driven development,” he continued.
According to the President, the institution will be aligned with Ghana’s national education expansion framework and supported by increased funding for tertiary education infrastructure outlined in the 2025 budget.
He stressed that this investment was particularly crucial for deprived regions like Savannah, where access to quality higher education remains limited.
“This university will train the human resources to drive our Feed Ghana programme and help deliver an agriculture-for-economic-transformation agenda,” Mahama said.
