The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has revealed that some health workers at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital attend to patients without wearing facemasks.
Some caregivers there raised concern about how management handles Covid-19 cases, which they say put their lives in danger.
Speaking to JoyNews, President of the GMA, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo said in a bid to address the situation, they noticed some of the members of staff were not observing the safety protocols.
"We also noticed the non-adherence to the mask among workers, in fact, staff of the hospital."
"...We've been noticing this. We tell them and it's like a joke.," he continued.
According to him, it is not a matter lack of PPEs but rather a worrying disregard for the protocols.
"We were provided with musk as we talk now I can confidently tell you that we have a mask. We have a glass."
Describing the development as distasteful, the GMA President revealed that the situation "even prompted the medical director of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to issue a memo, I think two or three weeks ago reminding all staff about the need to wear masks and other PPEs in the hospital."
In light of this, the GMA is recommending sanctions to health workers who fail to comply.
"So we even suggested to management that look these are our colleagues, but we think the time has come for some form of sanctions to be applied or meted out to staff who will not adhere to these protocols," Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo added.
