Some meat products have been confiscated by the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly (ASEMA) at Kasoa new market.
The products, including the legs, ribs, tail, head, and other parts of the cow, is suspected to be infected with anthrax bacteria.
The Central Regional Public Health Emergency Management Committee (PHEMC) issued a restriction on the sale and transportation of livestock including cattle, sheep, and goats, in response to the outbreak of anthrax disease in the Upper East Region.
The purpose of the ban is to control and avert the spread of the disease, as well as its devastating effects on both animals and humans.
However, on Monday, June 12, some environmental officers at the Adam Nana and the Kpometey Zonal Council Area, confiscated some suspected unwholesome smoked beef that was displayed in the market.
According to the Environmental Health Officer responsible for the area, John Gavi, his team after interrogating the sellers, discovered that the meat had been transported from Bawku.
As a result, he said the police were called to seize the product.
Mr Gavi added that the documents covering the products were dated Wednesday, June 7, which is the same date the ban was issued.
He added that his team eventually discovered that seven small sacks of the same confiscated product were planned to be delivered to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
Mr Gavi Gavi also stated that a veterinary officer conducted a test on the meat, however, because it had been smoked, its toxicity could not be determined.
Nonetheless, he assured that the environmental office would burn and destroy the meat that had been confiscated.
