Governs Kwame Agbodza

The Minority caucus in Parliament has served notice it will block the approval of the 2024 budget set to be read in November if the government does not commit to fixing the tidal waves phenomenon in the Volta region.

The Minority Chief Whip, Governs Kwame Agbodza said the Minority will not accept any development on the matter apart from a concrete solution to the tidal waves situation.

“We’ve served notice we are going to see the budget read sometime next month – November. The President should make sure that when his Finance minister comes to Parliament, they better come with some good news about the Keta Sea Defense otherwise, they're going to see a protest against the budget no matter what it is,” he said.

He was speaking in the Ketu to South Constituency of the Volta Region where he led a delegation to donate items to the victims of the tidal waves.

Several communities along the coast in the region have been swept away by the waves displacing many residents and destroying properties.

According to Mr Agbodza, government is not prioritising anything along the Volta coastline.

According to the legislator, although there are solutions to the problem, “What we are lacking is the willpower of the NPP to do this.”

In this regard, he called on the traditional authorities of the land to speak out about the situation.

“Speak out, don't just keep smiling at President Akufo-Addo when he comes here. Speak out! Your land is being taken and a man is showing no interest.

“…A country like Holland exists, Belgium exists, and much of that is below sea level. How are they able to do it?

Our country is richer than Sierra Leone many times, so how are they able to protect their coastline? Or is it because it's within a state that you don't get? We don't get much elsewhere, but we invest in those places,” he fumed.
