The Leadership of Parliament have signaled the National Security Coordinator, the Interior Minister and the Parliamentary Service Board to provide armed police escort for all 275 Members of Parliament in the shortest possible time or risk a parliamentary summon.
The leadership of the house, today, presented its position on the matter to the house in the wake of recent armed attacks on at least two MPs.
The Member of Parliament for the Akan Constituency in the Volta Region, Mr. Joseph Kwadwo Ofori, was attacked by armed men at his Tema Community 18 residence in early October.
His other colleague, Albert Kan Dapaah, who was then the Chairman of the Parliament Accounts Committee, was also attacked earlier on in the year.
The MPs insist, the attacks have been too many, and the time to provide security for the MPs is now.
Deputy Majority Leader, Alfred Agbesi said on the floor of Parliament that the National Security Coordinator must put in measures to provide all the MPs with security 24 hours every day.
Alfred Agbesi clearly noted that there will be consequences if security chiefs failed to provide the requested armed police escort for all 275 MPs.
The Deputy Ranking member of the Public Accounts Committee, George Loh, who was the first to make the proposal, said the position taken by the leadership of Parliament is in the right order.
While agreeing that all Ghanaians deserve to be protected, he was quick to add that the business of Parliament exposes them to a number of security risks and therefore must be dealt with.
But a security expert with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Dr Kofi Aning, said the MPs must be cautious in making their requests, else they will be considered as making selfish demands.
