MTN Group has announced the closure of an investigation into its CEO, Ralph Mupita, following a probe that found no evidence of improper conduct.
In a statement issued to shareholders on Friday, the Johannesburg-based telecommunications giant expressed full support for Mupita and reiterated its commitment to the company’s strategy.
The investigation stemmed from anonymous complaints alleging that Mupita had shown preferential treatment to a female executive, leading to reported dissatisfaction within the company. Some executives had reportedly threatened to resign, according to a Sunday Times report.
However, after engaging an independent law firm and counsel to investigate the matter, MTN’s board concluded that the claims were unfounded. The investigation, according to the company, faced challenges as the complainant could not be engaged. Nevertheless, the board accepted the findings and deemed the issue resolved.
“MTN shareholders are advised that the group board held a special meeting on Wednesday, 4 September to deliberate on a report by an independent law firm, assisted by counsel, tasked to verify allegations contained in an anonymous complaint against members of the MTN executive,” the company’s statement said.
The board further noted that the investigation found no evidence to support the allegations made, stating, "In its deliberations, the board accepted the report finding and is of the view that the matter has been addressed and is now closed.”
Despite the anonymous claims, Bloomberg News reported that nine senior executives had signed a memorandum in support of Mupita, underscoring the leadership’s confidence in him.
