Taifa Junction road crash leaves 6 dead, scores injured.

Six passengers are feared dead with scores injured after a Sprinter bus lost control and crashed into a concrete at Taifa Junction in Accra, Tuesday.

Some passengers were reportedly trapped in the bus for a while but personnel from the Ghana Fire Service and Police Motor and Traffic Department (MTTD) arrived promptly at the scene and cut through the mangled vehicle to free them.

It is not yet clear what caused the Sprinter traveling to Accra from Ofankor to lose control, however, Myjoyonline.com's Jerry Tsatro-Mordy, who had been at the scene of the accident suspects the 23-seater vehicle may have burst a tire.

Accra flooded after Tuesday's heavy downpour

Some parts of the capital have been flooded following a heavy downpour, Tuesday morning

The rains started a few minutes to 6 am and lasted for about an hour and a half.

Several parts of Accra, including Kaneshie, Abossey Okai, Circle, Nima Highway, East Legon, Tantra Hill, have been swamped

The rain and its resulting floods caused massive traffic in the capital city.

Several frustrated callers to the Super Morning Show on Joy FM urged the Police and other authorities to intervene to control the traffic.

“There is a very serious accident around the Tantra Hill roundabout,” Ralph, a caller reported on the Super Morning Show. 

According to him, a car had a burst tire and hit a pillar at the roundabout.

“There is some much traffic because of the accident,” he added.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia paid a surprise familiarization visit to Land  Registration Division of the Land Commission on Tuesday in Accra. His visit is ahead of the Land Reform Conference later this month and the upcoming comprehensive digitization of land records which is a major intervention designed to reduce the turnaround time for land registration and corruption.

PURC holds stakeholders meeting

Customers in six regions asked to pay 45pesewas more for power

Consumers in six regions could pay 45pesewas more for power supply if the request by Northern Electricity Distribution. Company Limited (NEDco) gets Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) approval.

Residents in the Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions and those in the upper part of the Volta, Brong Ahafo Regions as well as some communities in the Western Region, could pay ¢0.6755 per kilowatt/hour - a jump from ¢0.22 per kilowatt/hour.

The last tariff review was in 2015.

More than two years since the review, the PURC has assembled players in the power generation and distribution chain in Accra to make a case for an increase in tariffs.

Armed with a PowerPoint presentation to justify its request, NEDco Engineer, Dan Lardy explained what the power distribution company has done to improve power supply.

Glefe Children 'stray' dangerously after heavy downpour

The lives of children at Glefe, a community in the Ablekuma West District of the Greater Accra Region were put at risk after Tuesday's early downpour.

They were captured walking aimlessly by award-winning Photo Journalist, David Andoh, without protection from neither their parents nor guardians who were also busily scooping water from their flooded homes. 

Several homes were filled with a large amount of water to the surprise of residents after a drainage system was recently constructed to curtail such situation.

The residents are calling for the head of the contractor for a poor work done while appealing to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to take another look at the layout of the area.

Holiday for oil smugglers over' – Bawumia charges Navy to arrest criminals

Vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has charged the Ghana Navy to intensify its patrol of the sea to arrest all criminal groups involved in the smuggling of petroleum products.

He has assured the Navy of the government’s continued support to enable it to effectively crack down on the illegal activities that are robbing the country of millions of cedis.

Speaking at the Western Naval Command base in Sekondi Thursday, the Vice president said the government will do everything possible to protect Ghana’s resources.

“We want to move beyond aid but it means taking the right decision and making the best use of our resources, sea, fish and oil,” Dr Bawumia said.
