Ghana national rugby union team players have backed Herbert Mensah to continue as president of the Ghana Rugby Football Union in the wake of a petition for his removal from office.
The Ghana Rugby Union Players Association (GRUPA) sent a petition to the Ghana Rugby board early this week, accusing the former Kotoko chief executive of unilateralism, disproportionate remuneration structure, imposition of non-existent rugby laws, conflict of interest, among others.
But a member of the national rugby team Yaya Lukman has jumped to the defence of the astute sports administrative and successful businessman.
“GRUPA’s petition is ridiculous and the allegations are unfounded. Herbert Mensah is the best man for the job. He has done a lot for Ghana Rugby and his legacy will remain forever. Without him, there’s no future for the sports”, Lukman told JoySports in an exclusive interview.
Salisu Abdul Rahman, Team Manager of The Eagles, also highlighted Herbert Mensah’s contribution towards the development of Ghana Rugby, describing him irreplaceable. “If GRUPA doesn’t want Hebert Mensah as Ghana Rugby President, who can be as good as him?”, he quizzed
Ghana rugby has undergone massive transformation since Herbert Mensah took over as President on June 5, 2014. Ghana is now ranked 9th in Africa despite not being a recognized rugby-playing nation.
