The NDC Covid-19 team has donated medical supplies to health facilities in the North East region to equip them in the fight against the disease.
The team said, several major health centers in the North East region still lack adequate Personal Preventive Equipment (PPE) for front line health staff battling the coronavirus pandemic.
The team made the "worrisome" observation following a visit Friday to donate some Covid-19 relief packages to the two major hospitals in the region.
Led by a senior member of the opposition Covid-19 team, Dr. Vida Yakong, and regional executives of the party, the team donated gumboots, sanitizers, face masks, gloves, and several other critical complementary infection preventive materials to the Walewale Municipal Hospital and the Baptist Medical Center in Nalerigu.
The team made the donation on behalf of former president John Mahama.
The North East Region has recorded two cases of the coronavirus with one dead, Health officials are tracing persons who have come into contact with the infected people in order to curb the spread of the disease.
However, health centers across the region have complained of inadequate, and uneven distribution of protective equipment for front line staff, which necessitated the intervention by the NDC Covid-19 team.
Speaking to JoyNews when the donation was made, Dr. Thomas Anaba, a former CEO of the Ridge Hospital, called on the government to come to the aid of these facilities by providing resources to enable them to adequately confront and stop the virus from spreading in the region.
"Hospitals still lacks resources; basic PPEs and other complementary infection materials like hand sanitizers, gloves, face masks, googles; that will enable them to prepare adequately to confront any case of covid19", he said.
"Some representatives of the hospitals say they still lack materials to be able to take care of themselves. In Nalerigu, they complained that they didn't have face masks. We call on the government to try and distribute whatever they have, that would protect staff and prevent the infection from spreading to other patients, to the hospitals quickly so that they will be well secured and ready to combat Covid-19,” he added.
Hospital authorities who received the items expressed gratitude to the former president, John Mahama, and members of the team.
The Administrator of the Nalerigu Baptist Medical Center, Edward Addai, said the items would be put into good use.
"On behalf of management and staff of the hospital, we want to express our appreciation to His Excellency the former president and the Covid-19 team.
"I have watched TV and saw donations in other places and wondered when are we going to get some, not knowing it was on the way. So, today, we want assure that all these items are going to be put into good use".
