The National Labour Commission (NLC) is set to hold a meeting to discuss the strike notice issued by organised labour in response to the government's inaction regarding illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
The strike is scheduled to begin on October 10, 2024, reflecting growing frustration among workers over the ongoing crisis.
Executive Secretary of NLC, Ofosu Asamoah highlighted the urgency of the situation during an interview on Citi FM on Tuesday, October 1.
He stated that the NLC aims to address the concerns raised by Organised Labour and work towards a resolution that prevents the strike from taking place.
Mr Asamoah assured the public that the Commission is committed to finding a solution to the pressing issue of galamsey, which has far-reaching implications for both the environment and the livelihoods of workers in affected communities.
The NLC's upcoming meeting will focus on fostering dialogue between the government and organised labour to reach an agreement.
“We just got notice of it and the Commission will be sitting on [Wednesday], and we will look at the way forward. Fortunately, the strike is intended to begin on the 10th so we have time to look at it.”
Organised labour, comprising various unions and workers' groups, has actively raised concerns about the harmful impact of galamsey on both the environment and the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.
After giving the government a deadline to implement decisive measures by the end of September, their demands were not addressed, leading to the decision to initiate a nationwide strike.
