Government has unveiled a new fleet of road construction equipment in Tamale, the regional capital in a move to enhance road infrastructure across the Northern Region.
The multi-billion cedi initiative, spearheaded by Finance Minister and Karaga MP, Dr Mohammed Amin Anta, aims to significantly improve Ghana's road networks, thereby boosting the economy.

During the launch, the MP revealed that government has committed over GH¢17 billion to road development this year alone, reflecting its dedication to improving both rural and urban connectivity.
He detailed the government's strategic investment, which saw GH¢11 billion allocated in the first half of the year, with an additional GH¢7 billion earmarked for upcoming projects.

Addressing recent concerns, Dr Amin clarified that the funding for the equipment did not come from the MPs' Common Fund but was instead financed through treasury bills issued to the contractor, who then secured bank loans to procure the necessary machinery.
He stated that this investment is crucial for enhancing road access in rural areas, particularly for farmers transporting goods to urban centres.

Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Thomas Mbomba, underscored the importance of decentralising road construction to reduce disparities between rural and urban areas.
He urged Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to use the equipment efficiently to maximise benefits for local communities.

Ya Na Abukari Yakubu Andani II, the Overlord of Dagbon, expressed his satisfaction with the initiative, thanking the government for its commitment to improving road infrastructure.

He noted that this project is a critical step in fostering economic growth and development across Ghana's districts.

Northern Regional Minister, Alhassan Saani Saibu, highlighted the significant impact this initiative will have on the region, which will receive 131 new pieces of equipment, including water tankers, backhoes, rollers, wheel loaders, concrete mixers, and tipper trucks.

This development is expected to create 400 direct jobs and substantially improve the region's road network.
Representing JA Plant Pool, Munkaila Mohammed, Northern Regional Private Business Manager of Zoomlion, addressed the gathering.

He emphasised the collaboration between key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD), Ministry of Finance (MoF), Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), and JA Plant Pool.

He assured that the partnership would ensure rigorous monitoring and maintenance of the equipment, supported by the deployment of telematic devices for tracking and fuel efficiency.

This ambitious initiative marks a significant step forward in Ghana's road infrastructure development, promising enhanced connectivity, economic growth, and a better quality of life for all Ghanaians.
