The Northern Regional Minister, Shani Alhassan Shaibu, has vowed to resist any political interference that would frustrate his roll out of several measures to make Tamale clean.
According to him, operation “Clean Northern Region” is a project dear to his heart. The project aims to eliminate filth, promote good sanitation and good health. Therefore, any interference by politicians to obstruct his effort will be fiercely resisted.
Mr Shaibu assured of his commitment to enforce the by-laws and crack the whip.
“I said this during the launch that I will not countenance any political interference. Take it from me, I do not think that issues of sanitation will come to my table and I will not treat it seriously. If you break the law, the law must take its cause,” he said.
Speaking to the media at the first clean up exercise, Mr Shaibu said he has tasked all the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies and the security agencies in the region to make sure that the by-laws on sanitation are fully enforced to the letter.
The Minister last week declared the last Saturday of every month as Northern Region Sanitation Day with the first clean-up exercise starting May 29.
He said the authorities are in touch with Zoomlion to make available containers in which people can always dump their rubbish.
The Minister said operation “Clean Northern Region” has come to stay, therefore, no-one should be under any illusion that this is just a nine day wonder.
Mr Shaibu expressed satisfaction with the turnout and the support the people have shown in the exercise.
