The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed it will press ahead with its planned demonstration on September 23, notwithstanding the release of its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe — widely known as Abronye DC.

Abronye, who had been remanded for a week on charges of offensive conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, was granted bail on health grounds and freed on Monday, September 15.

Speaking to Citi FM, the NPP’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, stressed that the protest was not solely about Abronye’s detention but rather part of a broader resistance to what the party sees as sustained harassment of its members by the police and the governing NDC.

“We are protesting against the government’s continued conduct over the past seven to eight months,” Mr Mustapha explained.

“This is not only about Abronye DC’s arrest. It is about the abuse of power, the harassment by police and national security, and the government’s growing intolerance. The release of Abronye does not change that reality.”

He insisted the demonstration would proceed as planned and hinted at further actions to come.

“This does not resolve the issue, and we will not call off the protest. The demonstration will take place on September 23, and more will follow.

"We have seen that this is a deliberate strategy by the government, and we too will be deliberate in our response,” he said, confirming that the police had been officially notified.
