Osu Castle will be modernised in 2024 – Tourism Minister, Dr Awal Mohammed

Tourism Minister, Awal Mohammed

The Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Dr Awal Mohammed has revealed that the Christiansborg Castle in Osu will be redeveloped in 2024.

He made this announcement at the commissioning of the renovated Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park located at Accra Central on Tuesday 4th July 2023.

“The Osu Castle will be modernised next year,” the Minister said during his speech.

This comes after the ministry took the initiative to redevelop the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, formerly known as the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, in 2020.

Osu Castle was built in 1659.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park saw a face-lift after it was closed from public use in 2015 due to poor maintenance and dilapidation.

Known for his passion for Tourism and Arts, President Nana Akufo-Addo, in his first tenure, took the mantle to revamp the tourist site for the first time since 1992.

According to the ministry, the redevelopment of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park cost $3.5 million —and the project spanned over 7 years.

During his speech, Dr. Awal Mohammed explained that the renovation of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Osu Castle, W.E.B Dubois Centre, the National Museum and other tourist sites, was to “make Ghana the heritage attraction in Africa.”

The Minister added that “tourism is likely to generate between 6 to 7 billion dollars per annum in the next 3 years”, if all the tourist sites are well-developed and made attractive to the locals and the people in the diaspora.

Dr Awal Mohammed also noted that “the Akufo-Addo-led government will go down in history for investing the most in the tourism sector in Ghana.”
