Parliament has nominated the winner of the Commonwealth Day National Debate, Titus Owusu Darko, to represent the country at the 13th Commonwealth Youth Parliament (CYP).

The event, scheduled to take place in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, follows his outstanding victory at the 2026 Commonwealth Day National Debate Competition organised by the Department of Public Engagement, Parliament of Ghana.

Mr Darko earned the prestigious nomination after emerging victorious in the national debate competition held at the Parliament of Ghana, where he demonstrated exceptional leadership, eloquence, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of parliamentary democracy and public policy. His performance secured Ghana’s participation in one of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s flagship youth governance programmes.

Again on the Ghanaian delegation is Precious Akos Agrobesa, who served as his supporting speaker during the Commonwealth Day National Debate. Together, they will represent Ghana among young parliamentarians and emerging leaders from across the Commonwealth of Nations in deliberations aimed at strengthening democratic governance, parliamentary practice, leadership, and international cooperation.

The Commonwealth Youth Parliament provides a unique platform for young leaders to simulate parliamentary proceedings, debate contemporary global issues, exchange ideas, and develop practical legislative and leadership skills under the guidance of experienced parliamentarians and parliamentary officials.

Mr Darko’s nomination marks another significant milestone in his growing record of youth leadership and democratic engagement. Widely recognized for his contributions to student governance and public discourse, his selection underscores the Parliament of Ghana’s confidence in his ability to project Ghana’s democratic values and contribute meaningfully to discussions on issues affecting young people across the Commonwealth.

Speaking to JoyNews after his nomination, Titus Owusu Darko described the opportunity as both an honour and a responsibility.

“Representing Ghana on the Commonwealth stage is a privilege I do not take lightly. I look forward to learning from fellow young leaders, sharing Ghana’s democratic experiences, and contributing to conversations that advance youth participation in governance across the Commonwealth," he said.

The participation of both delegates is expected to further strengthen Ghana’s reputation for producing articulate, competent and visionary young leaders capable of engaging constructively in international parliamentary diplomacy.

The 13th Commonwealth Youth Parliament is expected to bring together youth delegates from Commonwealth member states to promote democratic values, legislative excellence, inclusive governance and meaningful youth participation in decision-making.

The programme also seeks to inspire a new generation of leaders committed to public service and the advancement of democracy throughout the Commonwealth.
