Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong

Chairman of Parliament’s Privileges Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu says the Parliament has an important role to play in the probe into Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong’s threats to beat Luv FM Journalist Erastus Asare Donkor.

Mr Osei Owusu says the House has a significant role to play in the outcome of the Committee’s work.

In an interview with JoyNews, he stated the Privileges Committee can make recommendations but the acceptance or rejection of same is dependent on Members of Parliament.

“Committee of Parliament is only a committee of Parliament you make recommendations to the House so yes under the rules of Parliament whatever recommendations that are permissible under the rules can be made by the committee but whether the House accepts or not the recommendations depends on the House,” he explained.

He added that “there is a Parliament Act which regulates what kind of punishment can be enforced if a member is charged with contempt or abuse of privilege so it’s the law that will determine what we will do.”

Parliament's Privileges Committee will meet on Monday to decide on modalities for the contempt case brought against Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong for threatening to beat Luv FM journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor.

Mr Agyapong was on Friday, July 9, filmed on a live programme which was widely published on social media platforms, stating that, “if he [Mr Agyapong] were President, he would have ensured that Erastus Asare Donkor is beaten mercilessly.”

On July 14, Speaker Alban Bagbin referred him, to the Privileges Committee of Parliament for instigating attacks against Erastus.

The directive issued by the Speaker is to enable the House to decide if the actions of Mr Agyapong breach the orders of Parliament and if so, recommend appropriate sanctions.
