The Ghana Police Service will today release its investigative report on a number of shooting incidents that have unleashed public anger over the professional conduct of its men.

Earlier promises by the Police to release the report last June were not fulfilled.

The Police Service was widely criticized for this in what was seen by many as slow-paced investigations.

In April this year, police officers shot and killed three suspected armed robbers at the Mallam Atta Market when they attempted to rob a drinking spot.

The suspected robbers were all beneficiaries of the 'Justice for All' programme - an initiative by the Judicial Service to ensure people on remand for more than five years without trial were given a fair hearing by the courts.

Though the Police justified the killings they later promised to investigate the matter, but this was after the public had expressed utmost disgust about the shootings.

The much awaited report is now expected to be released to journalists Friday afternoon at the Police headquarters in Accra. 

However, Criminologist, Prof. Ken Attafuah has doubted the ability of the Police Service to thoroughly investigate accidental killings by their own men.

He has called for the establishment of an "independent police complaint commission" to deal with the worrying trend of unfortunate killings by the police.

According to him, the commission will be better placed in investigating increased spate of shoot-to-kill incidents of innocent persons in recent times.

His views followed agitations against the Police by irate youths in Odumase in the Brong Ahafo Region last October after a 28-year-old mechanic was shot and killed by officers.

Also, in September this year, some Police officers shot and killed two of their own men who they mistook for armed robbers.

The deceased, both members of the Central Regional Police Band, were identified as Lance Corporals Emmanuel Tetteh, 36, and Francis Appiah,28.

In August this year, the Police killed a tanker driver in Ashaiman after they mistook him for an armed robber. The family of the deceased is crying for justice.
