A governance analyst at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) has charged the Police to prosecute election related offences in order not slide the country into vigilantism.Kojo Asante is worried over the growing cases of election related violence which have been swept under the carpet, adding the Police must be up and doing.In an interview with Joy News, Mr Asante chronicled a number of the violent cases, some of which he said had video evidence which would facilitate greatly the prosecution of such cases.He was reacting to comments by the opposition New Patriotic Party flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo who was challenging president John Mills to back his words for a peaceful election 2012 with deeds.His remarks also come amidst threats by political parties, especially members of the opposition New Patriotic Party who have vowed to be vigilant and to defend themselves if attacked by supporters of the ruling party.“If all parties decide that they are going to engage in vigilantism in their area we will have complete chaos. So I think the police this time around cannot give any excuse.“…If they are having challenges they have to put it out there for everybody to deal with it. So we all deal with it.“By now we should be able to know all the cases that excited in 2008, even after the election in Agbogbloshie; in the bye-election in Atiwa. There are even currently videos of people who perpetrated those crimes. What have been done about that?” he quizzed, adding, “I think we have to hold people responsible for their mandate.”But a deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa insists having a peaceful election is a collective responsibility by all political parties and not the responsibility of only the ruling party.He said the posture by Nana Addo which sought to put the responsibility of a peaceful election only on the ruling government is greatly flawed.
