Some residents in Manse and Mmrewa have stormed the Bibiani Municipal office in the Western North Region to demand the release of three persons who were arrested by the Bekwai Police.
Upon arrival at the Municipal Office on Thursday, the residents were prevented from entering the premises by the Police Command.
According to AdomNews’ Boah Augustine, after an unauthorized demonstration organized by the residents, the police apprehended three residents who were accused of attacking security personnel of Koantwi Mining Company who had to be rushed to the Bekwai Green Shield Hospital.
The peeved protestors are said to have demonstrated against Koantwi Mining Company for allegedly mining in the town’s forest reserves. But during their protest, a scuffle arose resulting in some security personnel sustaining several injuries.
Elaborating on the decision to invade the Municipal office, the group’s leader explained that their action is to make the Municipal Chief Executive, Alfred Amoah aware of the situation.
"This morning, we were informed that the police has arrested our people to Awaso. We don't understand this so we decided that we are coming to inform our MCE, Hon Alfred Amoah.
“When we arrived, Crime Officer of Bibiani Municipal said he would not permit us to speak with the MCE. So we told him we won't succumb to his demands because we have been unfairly treated.”
Meanwhile, the Bibiani Divisional Crime Officer, Supt. Seth Sewornu has described the current move of the peeved residents as unlawful.
He noted that the group did not inform the police on its decision to protest at the Municipal Office.
“This morning, the Bekwai Police went to the mining site and the victim identified three of the suspects for them to be arrested. It is upon that arrest that the number of youth massed up themselves and came to Bibiani to demonstrate. They were watering red bands. Demonstration in this country is guided by rules, public order act. You need to notify the police for five working days and all that.
“They abused this and besieged the Municipal Office, preventing people from entering the office. We cannot wait for people to be lawless, so we went there to make sure order prevails,” he stated.
