Business magnate and statesman, Sir Sam Jonah has called for national unity and reflection following Ghana’s December 7 general elections.
In a statement addressed to the nation, he lauded the resilience of Ghana’s democracy, describing the largely peaceful process as a testament to the maturity of the country’s institutions and the dedication of the Ghanaian people.
However, Sir Jonah expressed deep concern over the loss of lives during the electoral process, describing the deaths as “tragic and unwarranted.”
He condemned the incidents, stating that no Ghanaian should lose their life while exercising their civic rights.
“These losses are deeply troubling and unacceptable,” he stated. “The sanctity of life is paramount, and I call on all Ghanaians to join me in condemning this regrettable occurrence.”
Sir Jonah urged the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the incidents, hold those responsible accountable, and implement measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
He also commended the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Ghana Police Service for their efforts in managing the elections.
Despite the challenges, Sir Jonah noted that their performance preserved the credibility of the process and contributed to maintaining peace in the country.
Recognizing the divisive nature of elections, Sir Jonah called on Ghanaians to shift their focus to addressing the pressing challenges facing the nation, particularly the economy and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
“This is now a time for unity and reflection,” he stated. “Our focus must now shift to rebuilding our economy, which is grappling with significant challenges, and strengthening the institutions that underpin our national stability.”
Calling on leaders across the political spectrum to prioritize the welfare of the people, Sir Jonah urged citizens to work together in the spirit of patriotism and solidarity.
Quoting Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, he reminded the nation of the noble and glorious challenge of nation-building.
“Let us rise to this challenge with determination and unity. Together, we can build a brighter, stronger, and more inclusive Ghana,” he added.
