The Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiaso, Aful Benteh Kofi, has called on cocoa farmers across Ghana to exercise patience as the government works to respond to price fluctuations in the international cocoa market.
His remarks come amid concerns about the government’s ability to sustain the previously announced 70 per cent farmgate price for cocoa.
Speaking in an interview, the MP explained that the original price commitment was made when global cocoa prices were significantly higher.
“The pledge was made at a time when international cocoa prices were strong, but subsequent declines have made it difficult to maintain that rate,” he said.
He stressed that the government is actively developing a new legislative proposal that would introduce a dynamic pricing system for cocoa.
“Under the proposed framework, farmgate prices will be more closely aligned with global market trends,” Mr Kofi explained.
“This means farmers will benefit when international prices increase, and the sector will remain stable during downturns.”
As a representative of a cocoa-growing constituency, Mr Kofi expressed empathy for the concerns of farmers.
“I understand the worries of our farmers, and I urge them to remain patient and recognise the realities of the global market. These steps are aimed at ensuring sustainability and improved returns over time,” he said.
He further emphasised that the objective is to protect farmers, not disadvantage them. “The reforms will create a more transparent and responsive pricing mechanism that reflects market conditions while safeguarding Ghana’s cocoa industry,” Mr Kofi added.
He expressed confidence that the proposals, once enacted, would enhance stability and fairness in cocoa pricing nationwide.
