The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sekyere South, Evans Amo Twumasi, wants the ongoing Ashanti Inter-District Soccer Competition organized annually.
He has commended the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, for spearheading the initiative aimed at promoting unity, talent development, and sportsmanship among the youth across the region.
Mr. Twumasi made the remarks on Sunday, October 26, 2025, during the final round of the inter-town soccer competition held in his district to select a team that will represent Sekyere South in the upcoming regional tournament.
He described the Minister’s idea as “visionary and unifying project” that will not only help identify raw football talents but also foster peaceful coexistence and community development through sports.
“We have realized we have a lot of youth who have explicit talents. Had it not been these games, we wouldn’t have noticed that we have these kids within the municipality.
“So, through the good works of President Mahama who gave us Hon Dr Frank Amoakohene, he has initiated this which is catching up and making a lot of waves within the municipality.
“We have been able to select some few players who are doing very well and later, coaches will come around to train them for the main competition, and we are hopeful that Sekyere South Municipal will definitely come first in the end,” he stated.
The DCE urged that the football gala be made an annual event, stressing that consistent organization of such competitions could help unearth the next generation of football stars from the Ashanti Region.
“It is a good idea to have it annually. In Ashanti region, we don’t really have any program to have fun with it. Sometimes we move to other regions to enjoy but now, through Hon Regional Minister, we wouldn’t move to other regions for such competitions since this one has come to stay,” he added.
The Sekyere South District team, selected after a keenly contested local tournament, will now prepare to compete in the Ashanti Inter-District Soccer Championship, which is expected to draw teams from all corners of the region.
The initiative, under the leadership of Dr. Amoakohene, forms part of efforts to promote youth development through sports while strengthening the bond among districts within the Ashanti Region.
