Two suspected kidnappers operating in various churches in Accra have been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command in Darkuman Accra, Sunday.
The arrest follows "serious and diligent" investigation by the police and various stakeholders, the IGP Mohammed Alhassan announced at a press conference, Sunday.
"It is with great satisfaction that i wish to state that with diligence and tenacity of purpose by the Accra Regional Command, two suspects were this afternoon arrested in Darkuman in relation to the kidnapping cases that started from the 1st of December," he said.
According to him, the modus operandi of the suspects was to kidnap children who appear to be wandering about at various churches, especially on Sundays.
The IGP would neither mention the names of the suspects nor speculate their ages.
He said the kidnapper and his accomplice allegedly were involved in the kidnapping of children at the ICGC Christ Temple on December 1, 2013, and later at the Christ Outreach Church, the Light House Chapel.
The suspects would later ask for ransom ranging from between 1,000 cedis to 5,000 cedis, the IGP added. They were arrested in an attempt to collect the ransom on one of the victims.
Mr Mohammed Alhassan called for more vigilance by school and church authorities as well as intensify education of children to be conscious of safety and security at all times.
He said men and commanders in the Accra Region have been to over 70 churches this Sunday alone, embarking on an education drive to sensitise church members on the need for better security at the various churches.
